This Aromatech Scent Diffuser is the Trick for an Amazing-Smelling Home Our Shopping Editor Can't Live Without
I'm a style editor and the Aromatech Ambience diffuser has quickly become a staple in my daily routine. Take it from a former skeptic — you'll never fragrance your home the same way again
I received an Aromatech scent diffuser in the mail a few months ago, and to say my initial attitude was skeptical would be an understatement. The device harnesses Bluetooth to link up with your phone, essentially transforming it into a remote control for fragrancing your home, no matter where you are. A great concept in theory, but candidly, I’m not one to try to modernize things that I already enjoy. In fact, I tend to avoid them (I still write most of my plans in a paper planner). Why change a good thing? Though, after overcoming my initial doubts and setting it up, I was pleasantly surprised. My apartment has never smelled better, and the best part is that I rarely ever have to lift a finger.
Initially, I was taken aback by the $198 price tag of the diffuser — quite a hefty sum compared to most of the home fragrances I own. But I reasoned that candles and room sprays from the best home decor stores typically range from $50 to upwards of $250, depending on size and brand. In that context, investing in something that would outlast these items several times over seemed more than justified.
The Ambience diffuser, the Aromatech model I own, along with the brand’s other offerings, boast unique Bluetooth capabilities, according to Heather Lutz, an olfactory expert at AromaTech. These capabilities ‘allow users to set the intensity levels and schedule their scenting experience from their personal devices.’ The scents they offer are not only beautifully potent but also consistently so — a unique experience I've never encountered before.
When it comes to how to make a home smell good, there's reasons to choose this over candles. ‘They’re also a safer alternative to options such as candles that involve an open flame,’ explains Heather. By transforming scent oils into an ultrafine dry mist, these diffusers disperse fragrances in their purest form without leaving any residue behind. Plus, they're free from parabens, sulfates, glycols, petrochemicals, synthetic colors, and other icky additives often found in even very high-end home fragrances.
I picked my first Aromatech scent at random: ‘Love Story’ — a whimsically sweet scent that I didn't expect to become a favorite, but it has. Sweet yet not overpowering, it's perfect for all seasons. After connecting my diffuser to my phone via Bluetooth and downloading the Aromatech app, I set random times for it to turn on: 3 pm on certain remote working days, and again around 9 pm. Noting the 1 to 5 scent intensity scale, I opted for a 3 in the evening and 2 in the afternoon. Glancing across the room at my new diffuser, I marveled at how seamlessly it blended into my apartment decor. Then, I immediately forgot all about it.
That is, until a sweet aroma filled the air. It's become a delightful surprise during afternoons working from home or relaxing by the TV before bed. Unlike with candles, there's no need to light it — it's as if my diffuser knows exactly what I need.
Recently, I had dinner near my apartment with a friend who then invited themselves over for a nightcap. I hadn't planned for company, and my space was less than tidy. But to my delight, the diffuser had been working its magic while I was away. When we walked in, my apartment smelled enchanting. ‘Wow, it smells amazing in here, what's that?’ was the first thing out of my friend's mouth, rather than a comment on the clutter. Magic.
Heather recommends placing the diffuser ‘in any area of the home that will carry the scent throughout the space for a maximum scenting experience.’ For instance, if you desire a welcoming aroma as soon as you enter your home, consider placing it in the entryway. If you prefer to unwind with a pleasant scent at night, placing it on your bedroom nightstand is ideal. For those who spend a lot of time in their living rooms, positioning it on a shelf or coffee table works wonders, too. The options are endless. And notably, not only will fragrance continuously fill any area of your choosing, but the device features interval scenting to prevent nose blindness, a feature that I never realized I needed until now.
So, am I throwing away my candles? Absolutely not — I love the drama of an open flame. But is my Aromatech diffuser here to stay? You bet.
