I have a sweet spot for stripes. The timeless pattern conjures up images of beachside Riviera views, classic country club cabanas, and tailored menswear suits. While we can’t all spend our days luxuriating in the sun or sporting a Savile Row wardrobe, a striped accent chair certainly scratches that itch for uncomplicated luxury.

Adorning accent chairs with patterns minimalist to bold, there’s a reason that ‘Stripes will always be in style,’ says interior designer Nicole Cullum. They’re perhaps the most versatile pattern around — stripes ‘can be the statement making pattern in a room, or they can be a simple backdrop to an iconic space,’ explains the designer. Stripes even excel as part of a maximalist ensemble, complementing a busy scene of layered patterns while holding its own with cheerful strength.

From tonal black and gray varieties to more unexpected combinations of pink with green, the striped selection is extensive. Hard to ignore, but not in your face either, every iteration is the perfect blend of minimal and maximal.

Need another reason to love stripes? Well, I have 12 — each accent chair in this edit offers a new cause to commend. Get ready to sink into stripy serendipity with the best that this style editor has to offer.

How should I style a striped accent chair?

Given their all-around appeal, it’s difficult to go wrong styling stripes. Though, if you want to go for a design-forward look, consider pairing stripes with a print so obvious, it's completely unexpected: more stripes! According to interior designer Grey Joyner, pairing vertical with horizontal stripes, ‘can be a great juxtaposition.’

Or, you can throw a new pattern into the equation: ‘I would mix a thicker stripe with a smaller scale pattern, and a more subtle stripe with something bolder,’ muses the designer. From florals to geometric prints, ‘Even a plaid with a stripe could be a surprising and refreshing mix!’ she enthuses.

Is summer on your mind? These yellow accent chairs lend an equally sunny disposition.
