This former Victorian laundry has been converted into a beautiful contemporary home
The perfect blend of working and living space, this spacious and contemporary house for a painter boasts a thoughtful architect-led design
If a house for a painter is the home of your artistic dreams, then we promise you'll be daydreaming about this beautiful modern home in south west London. Located in the popular area of Battersea, this former Victorian laundry has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind home by Dingle Price, of London-based practice Pricegore.
The home's current owner is a contemporary artist and painter, and the house is uniquely suited to the needs of an artistic sensibility. The bright, all-white interior measures over 1,600 square feet and offers unique opportunities for combining effortless living with work in the visual arts. It's as if these vast walls were created especially for presenting large pieces of artwork.
The main living room is a breathtaking double-height space that could either be used as an experimental studio or a comfortable living space. The room is currently being used as a family room, offering a sharply contemporary take on how family life can be organized. In contrast with traditional home layouts where everything is compartmentalized, it creates a communal feeling (in fact, the house was once used as a communal dwelling for a group of artists).
The open-plan kitchen and dining area is washed in bright light from the south-facing courtyard. It also benefits from the warmth of the yellow pine cabinetry used throughout the kitchen-diner area. The minimal use of furnishings further amplifies the almost transparent quality of this house – not quite a blank canvas, but it feels distinctly uncluttered.
The upstairs section of the house has two bedrooms, a walk-in wardrobe, and a bathroom. True to the style of the rest of the house, the upstairs rooms are bright and airy, with a semi-open-plan layout that offers views down over the rooms below.
The bathroom has multiple skylights and a porthole window that gives the room a nautical touch. Everywhere in this home offers endless opportunities to let the imagination run wild – you could very well imagine you're drifting away on a boat in this bathroom.

Dingle Price, the architect who redesigned this 19th-century house back in 2012, called the finished project 'a kind of internal landscape where, instead of looking at a landscape, you're looking across a sequence of spaces.' The possibilities are endless.
