I Spent Hours Tracking Down the Most Stylish Metal Outdoor Furniture of This Year
Don't overlook metal outdoor furniture. I've got 12 compelling reasons to invest this summer
If you’re looking for an affordable, long-lasting outdoor furniture staple, let me introduce you to metal outdoor furniture. While it might not have the luxe connotations of wood pieces, there are plenty of reasons to consider this your new backyard essential.
I've spent hours scouring the internet for metal designs from the best outdoor furniture brands, combing through real reviews with expert advice top of mind. Metal outdoor furniture's inherently timeless, minimalist look made my search easier, but that doesn’t mean I didn't have any standouts.
In fact, I found 12 show-stoppers that deserve a place in your backyard. Discover each below.
Metal Outdoor Furniture
Livingetc knows design.
According to interior designer Nina Lichtenstein, the durability of metal outdoor furniture is unmatched. ‘One of the primary reasons homeowners opt for metal outdoor furniture is its durability. Metals such as aluminum, wrought iron, and stainless steel are renowned for their strength and ability to withstand the elements. Unlike wood, which can warp or rot, and plastic, which can fade and crack, metal furniture is designed to endure harsh weather conditions, from intense sun to heavy rain.’
Nina Lichtenstein adds, ‘While metal furniture may have a higher upfront cost compared to some other materials, its longevity and low maintenance make it a cost-effective investment in the long run. You won't need to replace your metal furniture as frequently as you might with pieces made from less durable materials, resulting in overall savings over time.’
Metal Outdoor Side Tables
Why settle for one side table when you can have two? This set offers a design-forward nested look, and if you’re looking to stretch your dollar, it’s like a BOGO — one table indoors and the other outside. I love the dramatic black, though it’s also available in white, navy, and teal. Priced far below similar tables that cost more for just one, this $130 duo is an affordable backyard staple. And if you’re concerned it’s too good to be true, don’t worry: 4.6/5 stars out of 101 reviews on Wayfair say it’s everything and more.
For me, metal patio furniture can go one of two ways: sleek and ultra-modern or something more evocative of a French brasserie. This steel frame side table from Anthropologie is definitely the latter, with its elegant curves and darling scalloped edge. Place it poolside or near a garden for an idyllic, fanciful touch. Despite its delicate appearance, it’s far more durable than it looks, thanks to its high-grade coating — très bien.
Yes, you read that price correctly. If you’re looking to furnish a backyard or patio on a budget, this round outdoor table pick is perfect. Its sleek, barely-there frame is modern, while its playful pop of color adds a cheerful, artistic touch to even the drabbest corners. It’s lightweight for easy moving, yet durably constructed and easy to clean. With an impressive 4.8/5 stars from 679 reviews and available in nearly a dozen vibrant colors, you might as well grab one now to see what you’re missing. Trust me, you won’t find a deal like this anywhere else.
Metal Outdoor Chairs
I’m in love with this lemonade yellow outdoor chair set — it reminds me of sun-drenched summer days, lounging poolside with a cool beverage in hand. Basically, it’s a vacation feel that you can enjoy anytime, right from the comfort of your backyard (and without TSA!). I haven’t tested it in person, but if these outdoor powder-coated steel chairs are anything like Terrain’s other outdoor furniture, rest assured they come with a legacy of quality. Pair with light woods and creams to enhance its sunny appeal, or opt for the mint variety for a coastal look. Either way, adding a striped seat cushion is a must.
I’m partial to this Mermelada Estudio-designed iron chair from CB2. It’s ultra-wide, making it perfect for spending substantial time reading or enjoying conversations with guests. Unlike most metal outdoor furniture, it comes with off-white seat and back cushions as shown in the photo, making this an extraordinary deal, especially for a piece from CB2. If you’re interested, I’d scoop one (or better yet, two) as soon as possible — these won’t be in stock for long.
Another phenomenal deal, especially from a luxury brand like CB2, is this stackable terracotta chair — a godsend for small spaces. I’d recommend this if you’re working with a small dining or bistro table, or if you have a small outdoor space in general. The best part is that you can easily stack and store these chairs, which is great for impromptu outdoor gatherings. These chairs are the life of the party with their warm and earthy terracotta tones — sure to spark conversation and smiles. One reviewer liked them so much they claimed to have purchased 10.
Metal Outdoor Sofas
Admittedly, I haven’t tested this metal outdoor sofa from in person, but I have extensive experience with Pottery Barn and can confidently say I’ve never had a bad experience with their quality. In fact, I’m consistently impressed. If you’re looking for a sofa to last the long haul, this would be my suggestion. Made with a 100% rust-proof aluminum frame and finished with a powder-coated slate, it has the clean matte design you’ve been looking for. To enhance its durability, consider purchasing a Sunbrella cushion, known for never fading, no matter the weather, and no matter how long it’s been outside.
A sofa from Design Within Reach for under $1,000? I couldn’t believe it either, and yet, here we are! If you’ve been eyeing any item from this luxury homeware retailer’s assortment, this is your sign to take the plunge. Even if you’re unfamiliar, this elegant geometric design speaks for itself. It accomplishes so much with so little but is executed perfectly with its welded steel construction. I love the olive, which would look fabulous situated among lush greenery or in a lawn area, though it’s also available in other luxe shades like Iron Red and Anthracite.
I’ll be honest: I don’t usually go for bright colors, but every so often, a style is so fitting that “obsessed” would be an understatement. That’s how I felt upon first seeing this loveseat beauty by Bent Goods. It’s the perfect size for small backyards and patios but would also look great as a set for larger spaces. Not much is needed in terms of styling, but if you want to make it look like something straight out of Design Week, I’d pair it with red and perhaps some warm white. Not for everyone, but in my professional opinion, incredibly chic.
Metal Outdoor Dining Tables
This dining table is a bit of an optical illusion with its gravity-defying, floating wire effect. It’s so beautiful that even if you never used it to eat, it would still be a great price for an art piece. But the good news is that it’s much more than just a pretty face, boasting an intricate steel design and protective coating. It comfortably seats four, and while Anthropologie offers accompanying dining chairs with a similar base, I recommend letting this table be the focal point of your backyard setting. Keep your dining chairs as minimal as possible.
There’s a notion that modern designs are cold and soulless, but this cafe-style table swiftly disproves that idea with its cheerful pop of color and glossy finish. The only thing more cheerful than any of its ten hues is its price, making it one of the best metal outdoor dining tables I’ve found after hours of searching the internet. And you know that dreaded moment when you move (or should I say drag) an outdoor table, only to find you’ve scratched your tile or floor beyond repair? This smart design thought of that with hidden floor glides that protect the ground beneath. Perfect for the weak armed or the indecisive.
I saved the best for last. Rounding off this list is admittedly not the most visually compelling pick, but it’s certainly the biggest bang for your buck. At under $200, this rectangular dining table anchors any space with its deep black hue and graceful curves. With 711 glowing reviews, it seems to complement every backyard aesthetic. Water, UV ray, mildew, and rust-resistant, and equipped with an umbrella hole for hot days or to add an extra splash of personality, this Wayfair pick is a no-brainer. Currently on sale, I’d say strike while the iron’s hot on this deal — though in this case, it’s more apt to say steel.
What should I consider before buying metal outdoor furniture?
Before purchasing metal outdoor furniture, there are a few things you’ll want to consider, says Milly McEwan, Product & Design Manager at RJ Living.
First, consider the material. ‘Different metals have different benefits and drawbacks, so you’ll need to think about which option might be the best choice for you,’ Milly explains. ‘For example, aluminum is lightweight and rust-resistant, making it easy to move and suitable for all weather conditions. Steel, on the other hand, is heavier and more durable but needs to be treated to prevent rust.’
Next, think about your climate. ‘To make the most out of your investment, you’ll want to ensure that your furniture can withstand the conditions in your area,’ says Milly. ‘If you live near the beach, where there is salt in the air, look for furniture with finishes designed to resist corrosion.’
And perhaps most importantly, remember that comfort is key. It might not come as a shock that, on its own, metal outdoor furniture is not the most comfortable. So, keep in mind that you’ll likely need to purchase cushions if your selected pieces don’t come with them already.
How should I care for metal outdoor furniture?
Proper care is essential for ensuring the longevity of any piece of furniture, especially those exposed to the elements.
According to RJ Living Product & Design Manager Milly McEwan, the first rule of maintaining metal outdoor furniture is to clean it often. Regular cleaning helps prevent the buildup of dirt and debris, which can lead to corrosion over time.
Speaking of corrosion, be vigilant about checking for rust. If you've kept up with maintenance, this shouldn't be much of an issue. However, if you do spot rust, Milly advises, ‘use a wire brush to remove it and prevent further damage to the piece.’
For those looking to go the extra mile, consider adding a protective coating to your metal furniture to enhance its weather resistance. The type of protective coating you choose will depend on the metal type. So, ‘Do some research before you buy one — and consult the manufacturer's instructions!’ Milly urges.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your metal outdoor furniture remains in excellent condition for years to come.
