Jonathan Adler spills his West Village secrets
So who better to give us the low-down on where to go, what to see and how to have fun in his personal neighbourhood – the glamorous urban bohemia that is Lower Manhattan’s West Village...
Best store for interior design?
I’d have to go with The End of History–amid-century modern antiques store on Hudson Street. Some of the glass is phenomenal. J’adore.
the label to bring home?
I try not to pay too much attention to labels – but one I can’t resist is Thom Browne (thombrowne.com) – his flagship at 100 Hudson Street is packed with menswear temptation.
only in the West Village...
Mimi’s Pet Portraits in Greenwich Village. It’s owned by artistic mastermind Mimi Vang Olsen, and she just so happened to capture the exact likeness of my perfect angel mutt, Foxy Lady.

the hotel to book?
Slightly outside the barrio, but The Maritime Hotel (themaritimehotel.com) in the Meatpacking District is like being shipped out to sea, minus the motion sickness.
Where to go for new York’s best baked goods?
I’ve never met a cookie or pastry I didn’t love. Mah Ze Dahr (mahzedahrbakery.com) on Greenwich Avenue is, for me, the epicentre of all baked goodness. Heaven on a plate or in a box (to go).
the restaurant with the best interiors in town?
Rosemary’s (rosemarysnyc.com) on the corner of Greenwich Avenue and 10th Street – the exposed brick, tile work and string lights make this a no-brainer in my book. When you’ve stopped ogling the decor, the home-made Italian food’s not bad either.

table to book in advance?
Cafe Cluny on West 12th Street (cafecluny.com). It’s in a small, friendly neighbourhood that’s so full of character. If you only had one night in NYC, you’d want to spend it here.
Best place for a lazy sunday brunch?
Sant Ambroeus (santambroeus.com) on the corner of West 4th and Perry Street is the perfect blend of jet-set glamour pusses and warm, homey Milanese food and service. The cornetti are TDF.
the after-hours hang-out?
I work out twice a day so you will most likely find me at the Equinox gym (equinox.com). Five floors of fitness fun.
the best gallery for browsing?
My motto is Modern American Glamour and no place captures this quite as perfectly as the new Whitney museum, the home of 20th-century and contemporary American art. Even the building is a stroke of genius.
What to snap for the ’gram?
I walk through Washington Square Park every day on my way to our offices and always stop to take a moment. It’s a landmark for a reason.
Best trip out of town?
My husband (Simon Doonan) and I love Shelter Island and escape to our beach house there every chance we can get.
